TL;DR: Emberkin is the best single-target DPS, Mirewarden is the best solo tank/healer, and Threadmaiden is the best 6-player co-op support. Stonekin is the safest pick for beginners who want to focus on building and crafting.

How we tested

Each Coven was leveled to 30 with a Hearth at level 8, then run through three scenarios:

  1. Solo boss dummy in the Witchspire training room — measured sustained DPS over 90 seconds.
  2. Duo run of the Bog Witch on Hard mode — measured clear time and damage taken.
  3. 6-player co-op run of the Spire Arbiter on Hard mode — measured uptime, healing done, and damage taken.

Numbers were averaged over five runs. Co-op synergy was rated by the other five players in the co-op session (1–5 stars).

Best Coven for solo

Emberkin is the best solo Coven. It has the highest burst damage, the fastest broom flight speed, and its signature spell (Pyre Cascade) clears packs of weaker enemies in one cast. The downside is its squishiness at low Hearth levels — run a Hearth Hound familiar until you hit Hearth level 5.

The second-best solo Coven is Mirewarden. It’s slower but never dies, and its self-heal makes it the most forgiving class in the game.

Best Coven for co-op

In a 6-player co-op session, the best Coven is Threadmaiden. Its Loom of Names spell buffs the entire party’s Familiar damage by 35%, and its mana-regen aura means you’ll never run out of resources in long fights.

The ideal 6-player composition is two Threadmaidens, two Emberkins, one Mirewarden, and one Stonekin (as the dedicated Hearth builder).

Best Coven for beginners

Stonekin is the most beginner-friendly Coven. It has the cheapest crafting, the highest Hearth build speed, and Spirit Dust farming is almost trivial. The trade-off is the lowest boss DPS in the game — but you can swap to a different Coven later via the Hearth.

Frequently asked questions

Can I switch Covens later?

Yes. Speak to the Coven Keeper at your Hearth and pay a Spirit Dust cost to switch. You keep your Coven rank progress on the original Coven.

Is the tier list going to change?

Almost certainly. Witchspire is in Early Access and balance patches land every 2–3 weeks. We’ll keep this list updated after every major patch.

Which Coven has the best romance options?

Every Coven has at least one romanceable NPC. Threadmaiden and Tidecaller have the most — see the romance guide for the full list.
